SANDUSKY, Ohio - The days may be getting shorter and the nights colder, but boaters still have the North American In-Water Boat Show presented by Toyota Trucks to look forward to!
Opening at Cedar Point on Wednesday, Sept. 10 and running until Sunday the 14th, the show will feature approximately 700 power and sail boats and dozens of land-based display booths.
Now an end-of-the-summer boating tradition, the event got its start in 1973 after organizers were inspired by an in-water show in Annapolis, Md.
That first year, nearly 5,000 visitors streamed in from across the region. Originally configured to display 91 boats and 16 accessory booths, it is now the largest in-water boat show on the Great Lakes and one of the largest in the country.
The event was held in Cedar Point Marina's north harbor until it was moved in 1992 to the south harbor. The larger area has allowed for expansion and the show now features interconnected docks throughout. Visitors can walk out onto the piers, get a drink, look at all the boats and use the restroom before returning to land.
"The location is a great asset, and we've grown with Cedar Point," said Show Manager Ken Alvey. "A lot of people come for the weekend and visit both the show and the park. There's more than enough to do when you include all the wineries, resorts, golf courses and nearby islands."
Many successes from past years will be built upon, including the Demo Dock. Introduced in 2006 as a companion to the Discover Sailing Center (which offers free sailboat rides), it gives novices a chance to drive a power boat or potential buyers the opportunity to compare multiple models in the same place.
The Boats Under $15,000 and Boats $15,000-25,000 pavilions are also usually popular, where cost-conscious buyers search for bargains on boat, motor and trailer packages.
On Thursday, September 11, all visitors will get in free courtesy of Toyota Trucks. Be sure to bring the whole family on Saturday and Sunday to Allstate Safety Weekend, when free lifejackets will be handed out to children while supplies last.
A wine tasting will also be held on the weekend, featuring wineries from across northern Ohio.
Boat show hours are noon - 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. on Saturday, and 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. on Sunday. For more information, visit www.cedarpointboatshow.com
